If you're returning to this site to see what's new, have a look at the Site Index which lists all the Solaris pages on this site.
These pages contain information about ordering an almost free copy of Solaris, how to configure Solaris to connect to your ISP, how to configure sendmail and fetchmail for a dial-up connection, how to enable dial-in access to a Solaris system (both terminal mode and PPP), how to compile and install software on Solaris (including gzip, the gcc compiler, fetchmail, TCP wrappers, samba and sudo) and assorted links to useful information on the Web and sources of free software.
One of the design aims for these pages has been to make them friendly to the new Solaris user. No prior experience of unix is assumed and and anyone who is reasonably familiar with computers and other operating systems should be able to follow and implement the step-by-step instructions on these pages. As long as you can boot up Solaris, log in to the CDE windowing environment and use the CDE text editor, the power and flexibility of Solaris is just waiting to be explored.
These pages are aimed in particular at the use of Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 on an x86 PC platform but they apply equally well to Sun's SPARC systems and, with minor changes, to Solaris 2.6.
If you're currently using Linux, it's well worth taking a look at Solaris, not least because of the extensive online documentation which is provided with the OS in the form of Answerbook. If you're using Microsoft Windows, why not try the market-leading unix alternative? Unlike any version of Windows, Solaris is powerful, stable, conformant to standards and can run for months without rebooting.
