There is a large amount of information on the Web which helps in understanding Solaris.
A really excellent source for free Solaris software is www.sunfreeware.com. At the very least, consider downloading the useful g(un)zip utility and the gcc compiler from this source. The Apache Web server and perl are also available from here and a lot more besides.
A very credible Office suite is now also available free for personal and commercial use in the form of StarOffice from Sun. For those who don't want to download this 65 Mb product, StarOffice is available on CD at modest cost from Sun.
And don't forget Netscape for Solaris. Although Sun's own HotJava Web browser is supplied with Solaris, Netscape is much faster and well worth downloading.
This is my list of assorted FAQs and other sources of information which I've found particularly useful. At the end of the list are some more sources of free software, much of it pre-compiled and supplied in package format which makes installing simple.
The Solaris on Intel - x86 FAQ A very readable collection of common questions and answers about Solaris 2. By Dan Anderson. Unix Serial Port Resources All you ever wanted to know about modems and serial connections. By Celeste Stokely. The Solaris Helper's Page Details of Helper Applications for Solaris. SolarisResources (Ultra/Intel) An extensive list of software, FAQs and general advice. www.sunfreeware.com This is one place you must go. Lots of precompiled software in package format. Solaris x86 Corner Information, software, hardware and more. Solaris Package Archive A good selection of free software in package format .
